El banquet amagat

The present book is written in both a pastoral spirit and purpose. Priest Rovira explains that he observes a current tendency in our society in which the Christian message is received as an interesting narrative that is related to truth but is no longer perceived as the truth.
At least it doesn’t function any longer as a truth that executes such a strength, that it’s able to influence and take over our whole comprehension, our capacity to get to know and to love, that is able to truly engage the human being.
This book wants to modestly bring back parts of the probability of this original narrative.
The author invites us to follow his arguments following him through passages of the bible. The further we read, the more we discover the huge capacities of the Christian narrative to engage us, and to convince us of his absolute generosity.

As we read, we re-discover what faith really means: to believe in the existence of God and to understand that he constantly communicates with us. That he knocks at the door of our hearts waiting for us to open up and let him in.
The Christian life turns out to be a secret encounter with God. This is the last Supper: a hidden feast with the most intimate aspects of God,
A supper with Christ, in which he sits at the head of the table, being our servant. And his constant love is the meal of this banquet.

Josep Maria Rovira Belloso (Barcelona, 1926) is graduated in Law at the University of Barcelona (1948) and post graduated with a PhD in Theology at the Pontifical Gregoriana University of Roma (1960).
After being ordained in 1953, the priest dedicated his whole life to the parochial actions.
He was a senior professor at the Department of Theology of Catalonia (1964-1996), and member of various distinctive clerical boards.
As an appreciation of his theological and cultural path the Catalan government honored him with the cross of Saint George in 1999.
He is one of the principal representatives of modern Catalan theology and he published around one hundred articles and twenty books.

Alberto Iniesta, la caricia de Dios en las periferias

Alberto Iniesta (Albacete, 1923-2016) was an auxiliary bishop in Madrid, incardinated at the Vicariat IV of Vallecas. He played a significant and very active role during the last period of the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy in the 70s. He defended the basic rights of the workers, stood up for a separation between state and church and always worked for the unity of Spanish people. He experienced strong hostility against him and even had to leave the country during a period of time in order to assure his safety.
In his district, everybody just called him Alberto – without titles and privileges, he was a very humble and plain person, who lived in extreme austerity, always close to the people. He was very involved into social and human rights, so he was always caring about the poor and the needed. He embodied many of the references of our actual pope Francisco, such as the joy of the gospel, the defense of those who are living on the peripheries of our society and the appeal to build up a church, which stands open and close to all mankind and to the message of Jesus.
The present book is divided in three parts: the first part resumes his roles as a pastoral bishop, pastoral theologian and committed citizen. The second gathers oral testimonies of those who were directly involved with Alberto Iniesta, sharing their touching and powerful encounters. Finally, the third part recovers the voice of Iniesta himself quoting his prose texts and his poetry.
This book doesn’t aim to pay a nostalgic homage to an idealized authority, but to re-empower his message and his testimony, strongly believing that the adventure of the gospel is still open to everybody and that the charming figure of Alberto can function as a guiding light to those who follow the same mission.

Emilia Robles

She was a religion teacher from 1991 to 1995 and she worked as a mediator and a consultant in pedagogic institutions from 1999 to 2007.
Since 2002 she has coordinated the PROCONCIL movement (an organization that stands up for a new parish council through a conciliar process). She has published and translated many books with Herder Editorial.

Vislumbres de lo real

Religiones y revelación

Glimpses of Reality. Religions and revelation [Vislumbres de lo real. Religiones y revelación]

Each religious tradition is the repository of a core of revelation entrusted to it. It gives access to a hint of reality. Without capturing this core, it is impossible to understand the constellation of symbols and beliefs that characterise each religion and emanate from such epicentres. This essay broaches the subject of revelatory experience in humanity's major religious configurations, with the intention of establishing criteria of discernment to assess the quality of such phenomena and manifestations. The author looks at the mystic background of each tradition, noting that all true religious experience has the ability to open up to a greater reality in the three dimensions that constitute the Real, that is, to a greater sense of transcendence, to a subtler and deeper understanding of what is human and to greater respect and reverence for nature.

Javier Melloni (Barcelona, 1962) is a Jesuit, theologian and anthropologist specialising in comparative mysticism and inter-religious dialogue. He is a member of the Justice and Christianity Study Centre in Barcelona and teaches at the Faculty of Theology of Catalonia and the Sant Cugat Fundamental Theology Institute. Important examples of his literary output are Vislumbres de lo real [Glimpses of Reality] and El Cristo interior [Christ Within], both published by Herder Editorial.

Deus ineffabilis

Una teología posmoderna de la revelación del fin de los tiempos

Colección: Biblioteca Herder

Deus Ineffabilis. A postmodern approach to theology [Deus Ineffabilis. Una teología posmoderna de la revelación del fin de los tiempos]. God is ineffable. Learning to invoke him with hope, in postmodern society is the goal of this book. In times where systemic violence is everywhere, the question of the possibility of hope is pretty rare. This is the main thing in Deus Ineffabilis, where the theology sometimes finds interpreters in anthropology and the philosophy of history in the western world, From Hegel and Benjamin to Heidegger, Girard and Agamben. However this problematic admits some really interesting points if it´s analyzed from South, with an anti-systemic view from the power of poor in earth.  Hope is a vital, mythical, intellectual and moral bet, all at the same time. Hope is a virtue of the last days, that we live in today, important not only for the religious of any culture but also for those humans that wish a better future. The last and universal hope of release is only possible when someone feels “unconditionally loved for the ineffable otherness that we call God”. How to call him with hope is the objective of this book. Carlos Mendoza Álvarez (Puebla de los Ángeles, México) he is a Philosopher and Doctor in Theology from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He belongs to the spiritual tradition of the Order of Preachers and has oriented its research towards the confluence between the Christian faith and philosophical reason. He teaches philosophy and theology at the Iberoamericana University (Mexico City) since 2001 and has been a visiting professor in Switzerland, New York and Brazil. He is author and editor of almost 25 books, some of them are: Deus Liberans, la revelación cristiana en diálogo con la modernidad (1996) y Deus absconditus. Désir, mémoire et imagination eschatologique (2011) that with the present book are part of the trilogy about the idea of revelation in late modern context.

Por un nuevo tiempo de alegría y esperanza en la vida eclesial

Aparecida. Por un nuevo tiempo de alegría y esperanza en la vida eclesial [Aparecida. Towards a new epoque of joy and hope in eclesial community]. Since its inception in 1955, the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM) brings together the Catholic bishops of the region. In addition to the regular meeting, held every four years, it has so far held five general conferences, the last one in 2007, in Aparecida, a city in the interior of the Brazilian state of São Paulo. At the conference, in which the then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio played an important role as rapporteur, was staged what some called conciliar process. Years later, during the celebration of World Youth Day (WYD) in July 2013 in Rio, Pope Francisco returned to visit the Sanctuary of Aparecida and the act stood there and took place as a key reference for all Church. The aim is to uncover certain threads that connect the Second Vatican Council, the process of the Conference of Aparecida, the new pontificate Francisco after the resignation of Benedict XVI and the future of the conciliar process in Church. Starting from a localized experience in a continent, but with roots, trunk and branches universal, we will find that its projection to other latitudes could purify and renew the heart of the Church and make the institution returns to its origins.   Emilia Robles Bohórquez studied Pastoral Theology and Psychology. She is an expert in religious fact, Gestalt, systemic interventions, mediation and social communication. She was a professor of Religion from 1991 to 1995. Between 1999 and 2007 he worked in educational institutions, as a mediator and consultant. Since 2002 he is coordinator of Proconcil, in initiative in favor of a reconciliation process. He has translated and edited El altar vacío y Equipos de ministros ordenados of Fritz Lobinger.

Camino hacia el Silencio

Pedagogía del despertar interior

The Way to Silence. An instruction towards inner awakening [Camino hacia el silencio. Pedagogía del despertar interior]

Based on his experience in therapeutic practice and his work with meditation groups, Esteve Humet decided to write about this way to the discovery of inner Silence. The text is aimed not so much at helping those who are already initiated in meditation or regularly practising some form of prayer, but, above all, at those who may hear about the subject and wish to get practical experience of it, but cannot find anyone to help them in this exploration.

Meditation is presented here not only as an activity, as a pedagogical process with a wide range of possibilities, but also as a life attitude with simplicity at its base. The author wishes the proposed exercises to be, rather than links, aids that are compatible with any religious belief or choice. Thus, they are all relative and, therefore, optional, i.e. means rather than ends, since the sole purpose is the fullness of Silence.

Esteve Humet (1947) is a clinical and transpersonal psychologist. He specialises in meditation and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). Drawing on two sources of inspiration, Christianity and Hinduism, his life has also followed two paths: one of solitude – deepened through silence – and one of offering refuge – whether therapeutic, or in connection with meditation and spirituality. He has translated, among others, Anthony De Mello, Henry Le Saux and the Upanishads. This is his first publication in Spanish.

No podéis servir a dos amos

Crisis del mundo, crisis en la Iglesia

Colección: Religión Digital

You cannot serve two masters.Crisis of the world, crisis of the church [No podéis servir a dos amos. Crisis del mundo, crisis en la Iglesia].

According to the author of this essay, we live in a bankrupt world, within a historical and socio-political organisation that is coming to its end and resisting its disappearance. The globalised, post-modern, late-capitalist world has thoughtlessly squandered a huge reservoir of resources and human capital for the sole purpose of increasing the rate of earnings and profit, benefiting only a small part of humanity, while the vast majority has remained excluded.

Therefore, a change is urgently needed in the way of thinking about and understanding the world, and the Church has much to say and do about the path mankind is to take. This institution cannot serve two masters: if it serves this world that leads millions of human beings to futile death, it will become an accomplice of evil and will legitimise injustice; if it serves God, it will put its whole being into action in the world to propose a radical alternative that drives us towards the Kingdom of God. Thus, the social doctrine of the Church can be a continuation of the commitment to the Kingdom, or a change of direction that leaves us tied to a helplessly sinking world.

Cuidar la vida

Debates bioéticos

Colección: Religión Digital

Caring for Life. Bioethical debate [Cuidar la vida. Debates bioéticos]

"Are you pro-abortionist or anti-abortionist, for or against euthanasia, in favour of informing or of deceiving the patient? This way of questioning involves dilemmatic approaches and disjunctive responses: yes or no, black or white. When the media discuss such questions, with public opinion extremely divided by political and religious ideological pressures, it is difficult to treat the problems with scientific and ethical seriousness. Any attempt to do so is exposed to sniping from both sides: to some critics it appears extremely progressive, to others it is disguised conservatism.

Accepting this risk, and at the request of people interested in reading it, I have reviewed the form and filled in the background of the essays in this compilation of conversations on the theme of caring for life. They come from two different sources of writings, produced largely in the last decade. Some are from specialist articles and papers, others from lectures, newspaper columns and round table discussions. […] I want a critical reading to extend the original conversations through dialogue."

Resistencia, profecía y utopía en la Iglesia hoy

Resistance, prophecy and utopia in the Church today [Resistencia, profecía y utopía en la Iglesía hoy]

Confronted with the dynamic that was prophetically defined by John Paul II as "the rich getting ever richer at the expense of the poor getting ever poorer", this text shows the reader that another Church and another world are not only possible, but necessary.

As the author is courageous to point out, the Church could have much to say in the current crisis if it remained true to the Gospel and did not trespass against the will of God by appealing to human traditions. Therefore, this institution should adopt an attitude characterised by resistance, prophecy and utopia, a utopia made credible "in small acts of liberation" amid so much lying, frustration and despair. As Castellanos himself suggests, quoting Albert Camus, "as we have no power against pain, let us do something to solve misery".

Nicolás Castellanos (León, 1935) is a renowned Spanish religious figure. He came to public notice in 1992, when he resigned as bishop of Palencia to take up missionary work in Bolivia, where he continues to live. His work has been recognised with the 1998 Prince of Asturias Peace Award and the Medal of Merit of the Municipal City Council of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia). He has also received Spain's Gold Medal for Work Merit (2006).

Otra teología es posible

Pluralismo religioso, interculturalidad y feminismo

Colección: Biblioteca Herder

Another theology is possible. Religious Pluralism, inter-culturalism and feminism [Otra teología es posible. Pluralismo religioso, interculturalidad y feminismo].

Religions, theology, spirituality, ethics and politics: these are the central themes of this book, which rethinks and reformulates the fundamental cores of the religions, especially Christianity. Juan José Tamayo attempts to respond to some of the challenges of our time: cultural diversity, religious pluralism, feminism, the new ecological awareness and the fight against poverty. He does so in an interdisciplinary dialogue, in the hermeneutic space of social movements working for "Another Possible World".
Religions can no longer create a universal discourse out of the Western world view. The wish to impose the concepts of equality and freedom that arose from the European Enlightenment resulted in intellectual imperialism. In order to avoid this, Tamayo incorporates the category of multiculturalism, going beyond inculturation of faith and multiculturalism to develop a new paradigm: that of the intercultural and interfaith theology of liberation with a gender perspective. This is where this book's originality lies.

Juan José Tamayo (1946) has a doctorate in Theology from the Pontificia University of Salamanca and a doctorate in Philosophy from the Autónoma University of Madrid. He is head of the Ignacio Ellacurí Department of Theology and Religious Sciences at Carlos III University in Madrid, is a lecturer in the Three Religions at the University of Valencia and a guest teacher at various universities in Latin America and Europe. He is also general secretary of the John XXIII Association of Theologians and a member of the Spanish Society of Religious Sciences and of the International Commission of the World Forum on Theology and Liberation. He contributes to many Latin American and European journals on theology, social sciences and sciences of religion. A key figure in Liberation Theology in Europe, he has published more than fifty works, many of them translated into several languages.

Hacia una espiritualidad laica

Sin creencias, sin religiones, sin dioses

Towards a secular spirituality. Without beliefs, without religions, without gods [Hacia una espiritualidad laica. Sin creencias sin religiones, sin dioses].

This book attempts to retrieve the human and spiritual wisdom of the great religious traditions for our time, in a cultural context that has become unavoidably secular.

We live in an age of radical changes affecting all spheres of our life, including religion. According to the author, however, far from lamenting the great crisis of the religions, we must face the challenge of cultivating a creative spirituality, free from the limits set by exclusive beliefs and orthodoxies. In order to do so, we must reread – with courage and in depth – the religions and spiritual traditions on which our ancestors founded their human and spiritual qualities. This is because we also need, now more than ever, human and spiritual qualities to guide our future and to manage sustainably our powerful sciences and technologies.

Marià Corbí Quiñonero, born in Valencia in 1932, has always lived in Barcelona, where she is the director of the Centre for the Study of Religious Traditions (CETR). With a degree in theology and a doctorate in philosophy, she has taught at the ESADE business and law school and the Vidal y Barraquer Foundation. She has dedicated her life to studying the religious and ideological consequences of changes generated by post-industrial societies and innovation.
