CALLED TO SERVE
THEOLOGY OF THE MINISTRY

The author tries to continue a dialogue that is both sincere, it is after all a dialogue about the search for truth, and also free, because truth cannot be tied down. He seeks to continue a dialogue that was begun some time ago in one of his classes on priesthood with authors who argued for a new vision of the priesthood now that the worst of the crisis is over, while keeping in mind the rich new perspectives that have opened up in theology in recent years. He does so because it is vital to continually reflect on the truly permanent and nuclear in the ministerial priesthood, as proposed by the holy scriptures and the doctrine of the church. Doctor Ponce starting point is the crisis in priesthood; from there he tries to create a new perspective, one that reveals the true thinking of Christ, as proposed by the church in some of its documents, particularly since the second Vatican Council.

Miguel Ponce Cuéllar (Fuente del Maestre, Badajoz, 1935) is a canon at the metropolitan cathedral of Mérida-Badajoz, doctor of theology, and teacher of several theological subjects at the Centro Superior de Estudios Teológicos and at the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Religiosas de Badajoz.
