Many yoga practitioners have ever wondered what the literal translation of a posture’s name is, how to pronounce it correctly or what we are saying when reciting a mantra.
This practical dictionary aims to ensure the correct use of the Sanskrit language in the field of yoga and is aimed primarily at practitioners and teachers of any school, without previous knowledge of Sanskrit. It includes the Sanskrit terms most commonly used in daily yoga classes: the names of the postures (asana) and other Hatha-yoga techniques (prāṇāyāma, mudrā, Bandha and kriyā), fundamental philosophical concepts, a didactic translation of the Yogasūtra of Patañjali, some mantras, as well as a brief history of yoga that allows to contextualize the use of all the terminology.
This lexicon does not follow the format of a traditional dictionary, but a reference manual, manageable, visual and practical. The Sanskrit terms are offered analyzed, translated, commented and accompanied by illustrative images and audios with their correct pronunciation. It can be used for individual study or as a didactic resource in yoga teacher training courses.

Òscar Pujol Riembau is a PhD in Sanskrit from Banaras Hindu University. He has taught at several universities in India, Spain, Mexico and Brazil. In 2002, he contributed to the founding of Casa Asia in Barcelona, where he was Director of Educational Programs promoting the creation of Asian studies in Spanish universities. He has been director of the Cervantes Institutes of New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and now of Fez. He has published several books and translations of Sanskrit classics and the Sanskrit-Catalan Dictionary. He is currently working on the first Sanskrit-Spanish Dictionary, forthcoming in Herder Editorial.
Laia Villegas Torras is translator and specialist in Indian philosophy. Graduated and DEA in Humanities by Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, she carried out postgraduate studies at the Universities of Benares and Pune (India). She has published The verses of the Samkhya the Ishvarakrishna and has collaborated with Òscar Pujol in the writing of the Sanskrit-Catalan Dictionary. For more than ten years she has collaborated in various training courses for yoga teachers.
The story of the Hebrew tale in the Middle Ages begins from the moment in which it conquers an independent position in the field of literature and reaches the category of literary work.
The Hebrew narrative of the earlier period was an integral part of the vast talmudic-midrasic literature without its own characteristics; until the eight centuries, tales were only one of the many elements that were scattered in this literature, in the service of the interests of the Talmudist thinkers to illustrate their explanations and transmit them in plainer way to the people. But the situation changed completely at the beginning of the Average Age, when the tale acquired independent literary form and appeared the first collections of stories. Four are the most important because of their composition and antiquity: The Ben Sira Alphabet, The Midras of the Ten Commandments, The Precious Book of Salvation and the Book of Stories (Sefer ha-Ma'asiyyot).
This anthology is composed of a selection of 121 stories of historical, biographical, religious or social themes that appear in the Book of Stories or Sefer ha-Ma’asiyyot.
Amparo Alba Cecilia (Segovia, 1953) is a PhD in Semitic Philology and Full Professor of the Department of Hebrew and Aramaic Studies of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, where she has taught since 1979 Hebrew Language and Literature and Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism, among other subjects. Much of her research has focused on the study of medieval Jewish tales, in their relation to rabbinic literature and to Judeo-Christian polemics. She is the author of books on medieval Hebrew tales, as well as numerous articles in specialized magazines and chapters of books on collective works. Belongs to the editorial board of Sefarad magazines. Journal of Hebrew and Sephardic Studies, and El Olivo: Documentation and studies for dialogue between Jews and Christians. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jude-Christian Studies Center and Vice-President of the Spanish Association of Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
In An invented Sefarad? are exposed the identification and interpretation problems that arise from the study of the vestiges of the material culture of the medieval Jews. Throughout its pages, methods of analysis, states of the question and historiographical controversies are being discovered.
In the initial part of the work, theoretical reflections related to the knowledge, study and interpretation of the material culture of the Jews are generated in the context of contemporary society and the dissemination of knowledge. The second part has as a guiding thread the dialogue between written sources and material vestiges. The third part contains an analysis of medieval Jewish archaeological sites and the specific problem posed. The selection of casuistry covers much of the peninsular geography in order to give a complete and current image of the challenges posed by the interpretation of the material vestiges of the Spanish-Jewish past.
Javier Castaño is a specialist in Jewish history at the CSIC. His investigations are about the society, the economy and the religious culture of late medieval Hispanic Jews and the early Sephardic Diaspora. He graduated from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been a researcher at the Harvard and Oxford universities and at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies in Philadelphia and has taught Jewish history at the École des Hautes Études in Social Sciences in Paris and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

This book gathers and exposes a total of twenty clinical cases of professional practice of the authors. Some of these cases focus on the process of evaluation and diagnosis, while others do so in the indication and the development of treatment. In all of them, the emphasis is placed on the individual style of each patient, attending to the patterns of communication, relationship and attachment, so important when building the relational framework with its environment and essential to understand in depth its difficulties or disorders.
Among the professionals who provide clinical information and who sign the different cases, we find psychologists and psychiatrists, adult, children and adolescents psychotherapists or couples and families. All of them have tackled the task of developing this book through true interdisciplinary teamwork. The clinical material is presented in a very open way, proposing reflections and questions rather than answers, with the intention that readers, especially professionals and students of mental health, can resume the cases, discuss them and deploy a new learning process.
Víctor Cabré Segarra is PhD in Psychology and works at the Fundació Vidal i Barraquer in Barcelona as a specialist in clinical psychology and psychotherapy. He is a professor of the Faculty of Psychology Blanquerna (URL) and co-director of the Master's Degree in General Sanitary Psychology of this same university. Since 2010 he has been evaluator of the Joint Commission of the Consell Català de Formació Continuada de les Professions Sanitàries (CCFCPS) of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan council of continuing formation in sanitarian professions).
The interview is one of the basic tools in the field of social sciences. Sociologists, social workers and psychologists make constant use of it, either as a means of research or intervention. But we often forget the psychodynamic aspects of the interview, which refer to the affective exchanges between the interviewee and the interviewer. This subject has been treated very much within the framework of psychologist, but has received little attention in the other areas of psychosocial intervention. Little is said about the emotional experiences that emerge in this type of personal interrelation, negligence that can make difficult the achievement of the objectives of information collection, delimitation of problems and further intervention.

Teresa Rossell Poch is Diploma in Social Work and Licensed in Psychological Degree from the University of Barcelona. She was director of the University School of Social Work of the Generalitat de Catalunya and president of the European Association of Schools of Social Work. He has taught in Social Work in several Spanish and European universities. In 2010, he obtained the Gold Medal of the Official College of Social Work of Catalonia.
Pepita Rodríguez Molinet is Diploma in Social Work from the University of Barcelona and has a Master’s Degree in Primary Care from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She has extensive experience in social health work and was responsible for the Barcelona Social Work Area of the Catalan Health Institute.
Healthier environments to prevent attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.
Be quiet and pay attention is the order that, directly or indirectly, adults usually give to children. The child’s necessity for spontaneous movement, so important for its development, is an obstacle for the tranquility of adults. Today, thanks to modern technology and lifestyle, we have the most sedentary and “attentive” creatures in history. On the other hand, they do not have adequate time or space to release the mental excitation and connect with their natural self-regulation capacity.
In this context, hyperactivity and attention deficit (diagnosed or simply “proclaimed”) have become two of the most frequent childhood problems.
From a preventive approach and a multidisciplinary perspective, Heike Freire analyzes in depth the social and environmental factors that underlie the proliferation of these disorders. It also offers a series of concrete guidelines that will help parents, educators and managers design spaces and develop strategies to meet the authentic needs of children and young people in family, urban and school settings. Heike Freire is licensed in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Paris X. She is an expert in child development and educational innovation, and she is also a journalist and writer. Freire has been an advisor to the French government at the Permanent Education Institute in Paris. She is the author of the book Educar en verde (Teaching in green, translated into five languages) and regularly collaborates in magazines and newspapers of recognized prestige. She teaches conferences, seminars and workshops around the world, and advises families, schools and institutions. Activist for the rights of children, collaborates with various organizations, such as IDEN, GSIA Ecologistas en Acción or Fundación Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente. At the moment, she directs the magazine Cuadernos de Pedagogía.
Greek philosophy and the formation of Christianity
The Bible and Hellenism provide the keys to understanding the birth of Christianity in the framework of the changes that occurred in the Jewish religion when it came into contact with Greek philosophy.
The first change took place after the death of Alexander the Great, in a time when the Jewish religion experimented utter transformations that affected human’s conception of the soul’s immortality and their resurrection, life in the other world and the system of rewards and punishments. The second change was precisely the birth of Christianity, which began as a Jewish sect, and in one hundred and fifty years it had already become an autonomous religion with its own Sacred Scriptures.
Did the thought of the Eastern Mediterranean pagan environment influence this distancing of the Judeo-Christians from their mother religion? Was Jesus himself influenced by the preaching of cynical philosophers? What is the place of the thought of Paul of Tarsus in the formation of the future religion? Did “the religions of the mysteries” influence the thinking of Paul or of some of his disciples? What is the historical place of Christianity within the religions of its time?
This book attempts to answer these questions, placing Christianity within the framework of the religions of the time, such as pre-Christian gnosis, the religious ideas of the Orphic and Neopitagorians, and the Iranian religion, which apparently had a great influence in Judaism and in Gnosis.
Antonio Piñero (Chipiona, Cádiz, 1941) is emeritus professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the University Complutense of Madrid. He is an expert in linguistics and literature of the New Testament and primitive Christianism. He published and translated canonical and apocryphal texts of ancient Judaism and Christianism. He wrote various books about the early Judaism and Christianism of the first and second century AD.
He is internationally known and frequently collaborates with radio, television and internet broadcasts.
Company’s Ethics is a book that introduces the reader to the ethics applied to the business world in today’s society. Carlos María Moreno is PhD in Philosophy and Diploma in Theology. Since 1991, he has been a full professor of the Faculty of Psychology, Sciences of Education and Sports of Blanquerna (Universitat Ramon Llull). He taught at the University of Örebro and in Coimbra, and was a researcher at the Royal Complutense College of Harvard. He is currently principal investigator of the Group “Organitzation, Person and Change” and the Ethos Chair of the Ramon Llull University. He is also a collaborator of IECO (Institute of Ethics and Communication of Valencia) and member of EBEN (European Business Ethics Network) and its Spanish extension, EBEN-Spain.
A short while ago, couples were set up with a pre-established script, which was to be followed to determinate concepts, regulations and even social rituals. In this way, whoever who was to be married knew perfectly which steps were to be taken and where they would bring them, just as the same way that a restaurant’s menu establishes and limits the class and sequence of the dishes that are served, without any kind of choice.
However, in the current situation of social and personal instability —changes in moral criteria, laxity in commitments and focusing on selfish and hedonistic short-term goals— have introduced new variables and personal preferences in the making of conjugal bonds. Manuel Villegas Besora (Barcelona, 1941) is a doctor in psychology and has been a professor at the University of Barcelona (UB) from 1974 to 2013. Founding partner and president of the Spanish Association of Cognitive Psychotherapies (ASEPCO) for more than a decade and director of the Journal of Psychotherapy, from its beginnings in 1990 to 2014. He also has long experience as an individual, group and couple therapist. Among his publications, include The error of Prometheus, Prometheus on the couch and The process of becoming an autonomous person (Herder Editorial).
Pilar Mallor Plou (Barcelona, 1968) is a psychologist and psychotherapist with a long professional experience in individual, group and couple therapy. She participates as a teacher in several postgraduate courses at the University of Barcelona, such as the Master’s Degree in Cognitive Social Therapy and the Master’s Degree in Sexual and Couple Therapy. She is the director of the Ithaca Center for Psychotherapy and author of publications on eating disorders, emotional dependence and couple therapy.
Transhumanism is one of the philosophical and cultural movements that have attracted more attention in recent years. It advocates the free use of technology for the improvement of human beings, both in their physical, mental, emotional and moral capacities, transcending all their current limits. The technologies used are genetic engineering and development of intelligent machines. According to the proponents of transhumanism, with the help of these technologies we could end the suffering, with the biological limitations that produce it, and we could even beat ageing and death.
Although many transhumanists do not see it desirable to bring these improvements to a point where the improved individual no longer belongs to the human species, others, designated as posthumanists, consider that this is precisely the ultimate goal: the creation of one or more new species of ours.
This book presents the different modalities of techno-scientific transhumanism. Their arguments are discussed, seeking to elucidate their strengths and weaknesses. The promises made by proponents of transhumanism are very ambitious, and not all are justified. But on the other hand, the criticism that modifying human nature endangers the bases of moral life, dignity and human rights, contains arguable philosophical assumptions and their consequences are excessively radical. There are other approaches that allow for a more balanced evaluation, on which a greater social agreement could be built in the future.
Antonio Diéguez, PhD. is Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Malaga. Until September 2015, he presided over the Ibero-American Association of Philosophy of Biology (AIFIBI). He has been visiting Professor at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and visiting researcher at the universities of Helsinki, Harvard and Oxford. He has researched in the areas of Philosophy of Technology and Biology and, in recent years, has been interested in the subject of transhumanism. His position on this issue is critical, but he recognizes the positive effects of biotechnology and even its potential use for human improvement. He has published several books and articles on these subjects.
Alberto Iniesta (Albacete, 1923-2016) was an auxiliary bishop in Madrid, incardinated at the Vicariat IV of Vallecas. He played a significant and very active role during the last period of the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy in the 70s. He defended the basic rights of the workers, stood up for a separation between state and church and always worked for the unity of Spanish people. He experienced strong hostility against him and even had to leave the country during a period of time in order to assure his safety.
In his district, everybody just called him Alberto – without titles and privileges, he was a very humble and plain person, who lived in extreme austerity, always close to the people. He was very involved into social and human rights, so he was always caring about the poor and the needed. He embodied many of the references of our actual pope Francisco, such as the joy of the gospel, the defense of those who are living on the peripheries of our society and the appeal to build up a church, which stands open and close to all mankind and to the message of Jesus.
The present book is divided in three parts: the first part resumes his roles as a pastoral bishop, pastoral theologian and committed citizen. The second gathers oral testimonies of those who were directly involved with Alberto Iniesta, sharing their touching and powerful encounters. Finally, the third part recovers the voice of Iniesta himself quoting his prose texts and his poetry.
This book doesn’t aim to pay a nostalgic homage to an idealized authority, but to re-empower his message and his testimony, strongly believing that the adventure of the gospel is still open to everybody and that the charming figure of Alberto can function as a guiding light to those who follow the same mission.
Emilia Robles studied pastoral theology and psychology. She is an expert in religious phenomena, Gestalt Therapy, systematic interventions, mediation and social communication. During the period of transition (70s and 80s), while studying at the University, she worked in a metal factory, being a compromised trade unionist and a social worker in the streets of Vallecas, where she was closely collaborating with Alberto Iniesta.
She was a religion teacher from 1991 to 1995 and she worked as a mediator and a consultant in pedagogic institutions from 1999 to 2007.
Since 2002 she has coordinated the PROCONCIL movement (an organization that stands up for a new parish council through a conciliar process). She has published and translated many books with Herder Editorial.
Winicott was a famous British paediatrician, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, who, altogether with Ferenczi, contributed significantly to the progress of psychoanalytic psychology after Freud.
He created concepts such as transitional experiences, the fake self in relation to the real self, the psychosomatic unity and, especially, the interaction of a child with its custodial person.
In Sáinz view, Winicott has to be considered a pioneer of what in our days is known as «the relational perspective in psychoanalysis»
The author explains in this book not only his own development of Winnicott insights, but also applies them to the practical field of psychotherapy.
He describes the importance of psychoanalytic psychology (in its relational meaning) when it comes to bring back normal life to a patient who is not in possession of himself, or when it comes to repair primary narcissistic disorders, or to live with strong emotions and use them productively, and how to recover through this the self-appreciation of ones’ own subjective authenticity.
This book is an approach to the interpersonal psychoanalysis of Winnicott, demonstrating that his discoveries are highly topical in the different practical fields of this knowledge; they can be useful for psychologist, psychiatrist, social workers and all kinds of people interested in mental, relational and artistic processes.
Francesc Sáinz Bermejo, psychoanalyst and psychotherapist is a professor of the University of the City of Barcelona and the University Ramon Lull. He works in his own medical practice, he supervises psychologists and social workers of public institutions of mental health and social care of Barcelona.
He introduced the oeuvre of Winniscott in the official formation of therapists and is the president of the Winnicott Association of Barcelona.
He wrote and co-published various books and articles about Winnicott such as other psychoanalytical topics.
