Casos Clínicos

Abstract

[Mental Health Collection]

This book gathers and exposes a total of twenty clinical cases of professional practice of the authors. Some of these cases focus on the process of evaluation and diagnosis, while others do so in the indication and the development of treatment. In all of them, the emphasis is placed on the individual style of each patient, attending to the patterns of communication, relationship and attachment, so important when building the relational framework with its environment and essential to understand in depth its difficulties or disorders.
Among the professionals who provide clinical information and who sign the different cases, we find psychologists and psychiatrists, adult, children and adolescents psychotherapists or couples and families. All of them have tackled the task of developing this book through true interdisciplinary teamwork. The clinical material is presented in a very open way, proposing reflections and questions rather than answers, with the intention that readers, especially professionals and students of mental health, can resume the cases, discuss them and deploy a new learning process.

La entrevista en el trabajo social

Abstract

The interview is one of the basic tools in the field of social sciences. Sociologists, social workers and psychologists make constant use of it, either as a means of research or intervention. But we often forget the psychodynamic aspects of the interview, which refer to the affective exchanges between the interviewee and the interviewer. This subject has been treated very much within the framework of psychologist, but has received little attention in the other areas of psychosocial intervention. Little is said about the emotional experiences that emerge in this type of personal interrelation, negligence that can make difficult the achievement of the objectives of information collection, delimitation of problems and further intervention.
This second edition of The interview in social work, completely revised and updated, offers a conceptual framework on this subject mainly from the perspective of relational psychology, as well as the application of concepts to real interviews collected in different services and social work departments. This book offers the wide assistance and teaching experience of the authors in this matter, for the benefit of students and professionals who exercise their functions in the broad context of social work.

Parejas a la carta

Las relaciones amorosas en la sociedad posmoderna

Abstract

A short while ago, couples were set up with a pre-established script, which was to be followed to determinate concepts, regulations and even social rituals. In this way, whoever who was to be married knew perfectly which steps were to be taken and where they would bring them, just as the same way that a restaurant’s menu establishes and limits the class and sequence of the dishes that are served, without any kind of choice.
However, in the current situation of social and personal instability —changes in moral criteria, laxity in commitments and focusing on selfish and hedonistic short-term goals— have introduced new variables and personal preferences in the making of conjugal bonds. Thus, couples doesn’t adjust anymore to the established religious or social “menu” in order to make a “classical partnership”. Nowadays, they choose “à la carte” both the ingredients and the components of the relationship, according to the conceptual modality and life experience of the couple role they want to make.
This book is addressed to those who are perplexed about the meaning of life with a partnership. It aspires to serve as a guide for them in order to make them able to achieve more knowledge of the cause, according to their own choices. It wants to convince that life in pairs is only the result of the choices that make the people within it.

Winnicott y la perspectiva relacional en el psicoanálisis

Abstract

Winicott was a famous British paediatrician, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, who, altogether with Ferenczi, contributed significantly to the progress of psychoanalytic psychology after Freud.

He created concepts such as transitional experiences, the fake self in relation to the real self, the psychosomatic unity and, especially, the interaction of a child with its custodial person.

In Sáinz view, Winicott has to be considered a pioneer of what in our days is known as «the relational perspective in psychoanalysis»

The author explains in this book not only his own development of Winnicott insights, but also applies them to the practical field of psychotherapy.

He describes the importance of psychoanalytic psychology (in its relational meaning) when it comes to bring back normal life to a patient who is not in possession of himself, or when it comes to repair primary narcissistic disorders, or to live with strong emotions and use them productively, and how to recover through this the self-appreciation of ones’ own subjective authenticity.

This book is an approach to the interpersonal psychoanalysis of Winnicott, demonstrating that his discoveries are highly topical in the different practical fields of this knowledge; they can be useful for psychologist, psychiatrist, social workers and all kinds of people interested in mental, relational and artistic processes.

Terapia familiar ultramoderna

La inteligencia terapéutica

Abstract

Ultramodern Family Therapy. Therapeutical intelligence [Terapia familiar ultramoderna. La inteligencia terapéutica] This work gives an overview of systemic family therapy, including both the classic view – because it assumes crucial influences in the systemic model's historical background – and a novel exploration, in the sense that these influences are interpreted personally and the conclusions drawn from them constitute an original and, in some ways, unorthodox approach.

Along with some of the author's already-known concepts, like complex love and relationship nutrition, others are presented in orderly form to make up an original mosaic. Thus, a systemic theory of personality appears. While the dysfunctional aspect of this theory is linked to psychological abuse, it also considers the relational bases of psychopathology, seeking to propose therapeutic strategies that are consistent both with these bases and with the personal resources of therapists themselves.

Juan Luis Linares, a psychiatrist and psychologist, is a leading voice on systemic family therapy in the Spanish-speaking world. As a teacher of psychiatry at the Autonóma University of Barcelona and director of the Psychotherapy Unit and Family Therapy School at San Pablo Hospital, he is constantly involved in clinical, teaching and research work. As president of RELATES (the Spanish and Latin American Systemic Schools Network) he coordinates major efforts to consolidate a Latin understanding and way of practising family therapy.

His written works include: Identidad y narrativa. La terapia familiar en la práctica clínica [Identity and narrative. Family therapy in clinical practice], Tras la honorable fachada. Los trastornos depresivos desde una perspectiva relacional [Behind the Honourable Facade. Depressive disorders from a relational perspective], Del abuso y otros desmanes. El maltrato familiar entre la terapia y el control [Abuse and Other Excesses. Domestic abuse, between therapy and control].

Escenoterapia: aplicaciones clínicas y educativas

Abstract

Scene therapy [Escenoterapia] The Scene therapy uses acting for therapeutic and educational purposes. Role play, allows you to ease into your conflicts. As the viewer surrendered without fear of psychological processes that occur on stage or on screen, or as the child interacts with reality by playing, dramatization also plays a role of speech, self-awareness and settling disputes and latent fears. The theater can have a therapeutic function, even preventive, by staging something like a dream or a game, through which processes of projection and reintrojection dissociated aspects of personality are stimulated, thus facilitating personal integration and emotional maturation. The fact that you can represent your suffering and turn it to a “piece of art”, you can help reduce anxieties and regain the creative capabilities, giving a unifying coherence to the diversity of characters that make up our self. The Scene Therapy can be applied to any area of care relationship that seeks to integrate the complexity of the person. This book exposes deep and affordably theoretical and practical bases of Scene therapy, especially applied to children, adolescents and youth. The book has plenty of examples for the activities.  Victor Cabré, Doctor of Psychology and professor of the Faculty of Psychology, Education Sciences i l'Esport Blanquerna, Universitat Ramon Llull (URL), also works as a psychotherapist for adults, adolescents and group in the Psychological Medical Center Vidal i Barraquer Foundation. He performs its main task in the Fundació Vidal i Barraquer as a specialist in clinical psychology and director of the Department of Teaching and the lead researcher of Scene Therapy Research Group of the University Institute of Mental Health. He is also director of the Mental Health collection of Herder.

24 ideas para una psicoterapia breve 2 ed

Abstract

24 Ideas for Brief Psychotherapy - [24 ideas para una psicoterapia breve]

This book presents and discusses different therapeutic practices that help to shorten psychotherapy and make the psychosocial intervention brief. The goal is to avoid prolonging unnecessarily the anxiety and distress associated with almost all psychosocial problems and to help clients to recover sooner their personal competence and capacity to function autonomously. This is, in effect, a manual of brief systemic therapy – more specifically, brief integrative therapy – with a key component focusing on solutions and a range of contributions from the Palo Alto Mental Research Institute regarding narrative therapy and systemic therapy in general. Clear, concise and well structured, the chapters of this work explain what the techniques consist of, what their uses are, and what should be taken into account when using them. An abundance of research case results are used to illustrate all of the above. The aim is to make psychotherapy as brief as possible, without compromising its effectiveness.

Mark Beyebach spent eighteen years as head of the Masters Programme in Family Therapy and Systemic Interventions at the Pontificia University of Salamanca, and as a teacher at the University's School of Psychology. Currently, he is co-director of the Postgraduate Course in Brief Systemic Intervention in Family Violence at the University of Girona. A pioneer in Spain in solution focused therapy, he has is the author of over fifty publications on family therapy and brief therapy, including 24 ideas para una psicoterapia breve [24 Ideas for Brief Psychotherapy] and 200 tareas en terapia breve [200 Brief Therapy Tasks] (co-authored with Marga Herrero de Vega).

Psicopatología y test gráficos

Psicodiagnóstico diferencial mediante los dibujos de la Casa, el Árbol y la Persona (HTP)

Colección: Salud Mental

Abstract

Psychopathology and graphic tests. Diferents ways of psicodiagnostics through drawing the house, the tree and the person. [Psicopatología y test gráficos. Psicodiagnóstico diferencial mediante los dibujos de la Casa, el Árbol y la Persona (HTP)]. This book is the result of a long teaching and clinical research in the fields of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and projective techniques. Taking the classic text “Psychopathological indicators in projective techniques”, Elsa Grassano Piccolo, and psychoanalytic theory of Melanie Klein, as a reference, the author has produced a work that will be useful for professionals who use projective to all interested students in the same techniques. To start with, Barbosa makes a theoretical nosographic psychopathological frame of large organizations. Subsequently, it provides the indicators to establish a differential diagnosis and eventually makes its personal contributions around some specific features of graphic projective tests, especially the Tree test and the House test.   Pere Barbosa, clinical psychologist, holds a degree in Educational Sciences and a Diploma in School Psychology. He teaches at the Institut Universitari de Salut Mental Vidal i Barraquer Foundation and a member of the Catalan Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ACPP) of the Catalan Society of the Rorschach i Mètodes Projectius (SCRIMP) and the Spanish Society of Rorschach and Projective Methods (SERYMP).

Relaciones, vivencias y psicopatología

Las bases relacionales del sufrimiento mental excesivo

Abstract

Relations, experiences and psychopathology. The interpersonal bases of disproportionate mental suffering [Relaciones, vivencias y psicopatología. Las bases relacionales del sufrimiento mental excesivo]. Nowadays, in mental health area, very simple approach prevails: every ailment is an organic and genetic disease. Everything has it purpose in the mind and each disease has an objective diagnosis and drug treatment, administrated by an expert. This puerile approach is greeted with enthusiasm by certain sectors of psychiatry. What is more, some of these preconceptions are not questioned by experts. So we come to a paradoxical situation. The mental disorders are treated and studied without regard for mind or society. He suffers from a mental disorder, but emotions it seems that is not taken into account; there is only the brain, tangible, biological, physical. This book emphasizes the need to take into account the links to better understand why some human beings suffer and pass it on to their children, compromising the mental health of their children. The authors maintain that the mental is fundamentally relational and that a mind cannot be built in isolation from other minds. The environment, that is, the other should stock up for life and to face the difficulties inherent in all existence without falling apart. We cannot prevent human suffering, but try to make life as good as possible and that our children grow in the conditions necessary to enjoy it.     Antoni Talarn doctor of psychology and a specialist in clinical psychology, teaches at the School of Psychology at the University of Barcelona. Cómo criar hijos tiranos

Manual de antiayuda para padres de niños y adolescentes

Abstract

How to raise child tyrants. An anti-help guide for parents of children and teenagers [Cómo criar hijos tiranos. Manual de antiayuda para padres de niños y adolescentes] .

In their 25 years' experience as family therapists, Mark Beyebach and Marga Herrero de Vega have seen, time and time and again, how parents strive to educate their children as caring, honest persons and responsible, supportive citizens. They have also observed, however, that these good intentions often lead to counter-productive patterns of interaction, which actually result in these children becoming firstly capricious, then despots in adolescence and, finally, real tyrants.

The aim of this book is precisely to identify and describe these harmful patterns, not in order to blame parents, but to help them to identify and break the patterns. The authors have sought to make the book provocative and entertaining, using paradox and a casual, ironic tone to present a set of concrete, functional recommendations for educating child tyrants.

Marga Herrero de Vega taught at the Faculty of Psychology at the Pontificia University of Salamanca and also in the University's Masters Programme in Family Therapy and Systemic Interventions. She practises privately as a family therapist, is an accreditation supervisor for the Spanish Family Therapy Federation (FEATF), and teaches and lectures on these subjects in Spain and abroad. She is the author of several publications on brief therapy and family therapy, including 200 tareas en terapia breve [200 Brief Therapy Tasks], co-authored with Mark Beyebach.

El error de Prometeo

Psico(pato)logía del desarrollo moral

Abstract

Prometheus's Mistake. Psycho(patho)logy of moral evolution [El error de Prometeo. Psico(pato)logía del desarrollo moral]

Prometheus managed to snatch fire and craft from the gods to give them to men, but he forgot to provide them with a regulatory system to allow them to live in peace and harmony with themselves and their like. It was Zeus himself – as Plato tells us in the Protagoras – who had to remedy this error, giving them moral conscience to fulfil this function.

Today, we can affirm that the appearance of moral conscience is not a divine gift, but follows an evolutionary process of construction in the different stages of psychological development. This process has a cost in psychological terms, since combining self interest with the interest of others generates a certain structural tension in the system of moral regulation. This may result in personality or anxiety-depressive disorders. This book presents the vicissitudes of the human psyche from the evolutionary and structural perspectives of moral development.

Manuel Villegas Besora is a doctor in psychology who has taught at the University of Barcelona since 1974. His teaching activity has focused on training and supervising therapists in Spanish, Latin American and Italian universities. As director of the journal, Revista de Psicoterapia, since 1990, he has made the publication a national and international point of reference in its field. He has extensive professional experience as an individual, group and couples therapist and is a member of the Spanish Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy, of which he was a founding member and president for more than a decade.
